TREE
living thing
that offers
shade & air,
rooted, long-lived
creature
that stands
as if in pride
outside the moving mirror
of our short lives,
sprouting,
moving outwards,
budding
blooming,
content
to be
in this space
now
breathing

THE OAK TREES
From the gardens I come to you, sons of the mountains!
From the gardens, that’s where Nature lives full of patience and homely,
Caring and cared for, in communion with the diligent man.
But you, Magnificent Ones! you stand there like a people of Titans
In the tamer world, and you belong to yourself only and to the sky,
That nourished you and educated, and to the earth that gave birth to you.
None of you attended the school of the humans,
And you strive, joyous and free, from strong roots,
Upwards among each other, and seize, like the eagle his prey,
With enormous arms, space, and towards the clouds
Cheerful and large, the sunny treetop is turned.
A world of its own is each one of you; like the stars of the sky
You live, each one a God, together in freest Union.
If only I could suffer it, servitude, I would never regard with envy
This Forest, and gladly would cling to gregarious life.
If only the heart would not tie me to gregarious life,
As it cannot be without love, how gladly I would live among you.

And was swept
away breathless
By a gust of

FRÜHJAHR
Aus dem Küchenfenster
kuckend seh ich
daß endlich auch
der
zweite Baum
anfängt
zu grünen nur
Dieses schwarze

METAMORPHOSIS
I tie an autumn leaf to a frozen branch
and impede its free flight
I catch the wind above the sea
and force it into a rock.
I teach the soil to harden like stone
and cut back the roots of the trees.
I disinfect the dew
and my false senses,
I learn to love standstill.

FORSAKEN
In the dream I cried out
awakened
and came out to a field.
In the field a gentle misting rain,
frogs croaking
in deepening shadows.
I hesitate, hands clasped behind me,
nervously scanning the ground.
From within the firefly-swarming forest
someone calls out “I’m going; stay well!”
and sings.

ABANDONADO
En el sueño grité
despierto
y salí a un campo.
En el campo una suave lluvia neblinosa,
ranas croando
en sombras cada vez más profundas.
Titubeo, con las manos juntas detrás de mí,
escaneando nerviosamente el suelo.
Desde dentro del bosque lleno de luciérnagas
alguien grita "Me voy; ¡mantenerse bien!"
y canta.

Recuerdos de un árbol
Mi figura se forma en tus ojos
Tu mente da luz a mis ideas
Que siempre son blancas níveas
Como la dulzura de tu rostro
Ya casi nunca pienso en ti
Ni aquellos largos sollozos
Cuando decías “nosotros”
Mientras dejabas el jardín
Mas mi aroma te guiaba
De vuelta a nuestra guarida
Y con carrera furtiva
La aventura continuaba
Tibias tus ávidas palmas
Trepando hasta mi follaje
Anidabas en mi ramaje
Y nos envolvía la calma
Contemplábamos las nubes
Refrescados por la brisa
Estremecidos de tu risa
Cristalina de querube
Fui breve, breve en tu historia
Sobre dos seres etéreos
Que se vuelven aún más bellos
Existiendo en la memoria.

ERINNERUNGEN AN EINEN BAUM
Meine Gestalt formt sich in deinen Augen
Dein Verstand gibt meinen Ideen Licht
die immer schneeweiß sind
wie die Süße deines Gesichts
Ich denke kaum noch an dich
noch an diese langen Schluchzer
als du "wir" sagtest
während du den Garten verließest
Aber mein Duft hat dich geführt
zurück zu unserem Versteck
und mit einem heimlichen Rennen
ging das Abenteuer weiter
Wärm deine eifrigen Hände
Indem du kletterst in mein Laubdach
Du nistestest in meinen Zweigen

In

Looking out of the

to green only

in front of it in the wind
frightens me

METAMORPHOSE
Ich binde das
Herbstblatt an den gefrorenen Ast
und verhindere
seinen freien Flug.
Ich fange den
Wind über den Meeren
und zwinge ihn in
einen Felsen.
Ich lehre die
Erde sich zu versteinern
und beschneide
die Wurzeln der Bäume.
Ich desinfiziere
den Tau
und meine
falschen Sinne,
Ich lerne den
Stillstand zu lieben.

VERLASSEN
In dem Traum
schrie ich auf
wach geworden
und kam heraus
auf ein Feld.
Auf dem Feld - sanfter
nebliger Regen,
Frösche, die
quaken
in sich
vertiefendem Schatten.
Ich zögere, die Hände
verschränkt auf dem Rücken,
während die Augen
nervös den Boden absuchen.
Aus dem von Glühwürmchen erfüllten Wald
ruft jemand “Ich
gehe; leb wohl!”
und singt.

MEMORIES OF A TREE
My figure forms in your eyes
Your mind gives light to my ideas
that are always snowy white
like the sweetness of your face
I hardly ever think of you anymore
Not those long sobs
when you said "we"
while you were leaving the garden
But my aroma guided you
back to our lair
And with a furtive race
the adventure continued
Warm your avid palms
climbing up my foliage
You nested in my branches
and the calm enveloped us
We gazed at the clouds
cooled by the breeze
shaken by your laughter
crystalline, of a Cherub
I was short, short in your story
about two ethereal beings
that become even more beautiful
existing in memory.
